OUR CLUB

Who We Are

Sendokai Aikido Yoshinkan UK is a UK-based group practising Yoshinkan Aikido in the tradition taught by its founder, Soke Gozo Shioda. Our training is rooted in clear fundamentals, with a strong emphasis on basics first, allowing depth to develop over time; the “soft” aspect of Aikido is not a shortcut but the result of years of disciplined practice, balance, timing, and precise body movement.

We train to blend with an attacker’s force and develop control through continuous practice, with a strong emphasis on tenacity and spirit. We also continue to grow by learning from high-ranking visiting Sensei from Japan and abroad, ensuring that the group’s standard keeps progressing.

Sendokai is a non-profit organisation. Our instructors teach on a voluntary basis and do not receive payment. If you are interested in joining, please come along and speak with an instructor — beginners are welcome.

HOW WE TRAIN

Our Approach

Sendokai Aikido Yoshinkan UK practises Yoshinkan Aikido in the tradition of its founder, Soke Gozo Shioda. Our training is structured and progressive: we build strong basics first, then develop control, timing, and flow through consistent practice. Beginners are welcome, and safety is at the heart of every class.

Foundation

We build strong basics first: posture, footwork and balance — the foundation for every technique.

PROGRESSION

From basics to control: timing, connection and safe ukemi, with steady progression over time.

Our Programmes

Children’s Aikido

In our children’s Aikido classes, students learn more than techniques. Training builds coordination, focus, and respectful dojo etiquette in a safe, structured environment. Sessions are engaging and age-appropriate, helping children develop calm self-control and confidence over time.

  • Confidence and focus
  • Balance and coordination
  • Respect and self-control

Adults Aikido

Adults train for many reasons — fitness, mobility, stress management, or simply the challenge of learning Aikido properly. Our classes are structured and progressive, built on strong fundamentals with controlled partner practice and steady development over time. Training is suitable for both men and women, including complete beginners.

  • Fitness and mobility
  • Calm confidence and focus
  • A supportive dojo community

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Tenacity & Spirit

Sendokai practises Yoshinkan Aikido as taught by its founder, Soke Gozo Shioda, under the guidance of Sensei Terry Harrison. Training begins with the original “hard-style” basics—clear, disciplined movement and strong fundamentals—and, over time, develops the “softer” side: subtle technique, balance, and precise timing. We learn to blend with an attacker’s force and, through continued practice, develop control. Training is practical, developing mind and body together with the attitude of “Tenacity and Spirit” and the aim to “Strive for the Ultimate”.

BASICS FIRST

Strong fundamentals before technique.

CONTROL & TIMING

Balance, connection and precise movement.

SAFETY & RESPECT

Controlled partner practice, steady progress.

TENACITY & SPIRIT

Train with discipline — strive for the ultimate.
