OUR CLUB

you need to know

Everything you need to know before your first class — no jargon, no pressure.
Before people join Sendokai, they usually want to know the same things: Is this safe? Am I fit enough? What will people think of a complete beginner walking in? What do I actually wear? Is it right for my child? How much will it cost, and what am I committing to?
These are good questions, and they deserve direct answers — not brochure language, not vague reassurances, and not a wall of text you have to dig through to find what you’re looking for.
Yoshinkan Aikido has a reputation for being methodical and clear, and we try to bring the same approach to everything we do at Sendokai — including how we talk to people who are thinking about joining. The FAQs below cover the practical things you need to know before you step through the door: what the training involves, what safeguards are in place, how progression works, and how to get started without any pressure.
If you still have questions after reading, reach out. We’d rather answer ten questions upfront than have someone walk away unsure.

Faqs

I'm a complete beginner — can I really join Sendokai Aikido Yoshinkan UK with no experience?

Absolutely. Sendokai Aikido Yoshinkan UK welcomes students of all ages and backgrounds with no prior martial arts experience required. Every class is structured to take you through the fundamentals step by step, at your own pace.

What will happen in my very first class at Sendokai?

You will be greeted by an instructor, shown around the dojo, and joined by a senior student who will guide you through the basics. A typical first session includes a gentle warm-up, simple posture and footwork drills, an introduction to safe falling, and a few beginner partner exercises — nothing that requires fitness or coordination you don’t already have.

Is Sendokai Aikido Yoshinkan safe? How do you prevent injuries?

Safety is central to everything we do at Sendokai. Classes are held on proper matted surfaces with appropriate spacing, and all techniques are taught progressively — students learn correct posture and safe falling before any dynamic throwing. Training is cooperative, not competitive: you and your partner look after each other throughout.

I have an existing injury or health condition — can I still train at Sendokai?

In most cases, yes. Please consult your GP first and let your instructor know before your first class. Sendokai instructors are experienced in adapting training to individual needs — whether that means modifying breakfalls, reducing intensity, or focusing on footwork and upper-body technique while something heals.

⚠️ If you have an existing injury, health condition, or concern, consult your GP and inform your instructor before starting.

Is Sendokai Aikido Yoshinkan suitable for women and older adults?

Yes. Aikido relies on timing, balance, and body mechanics rather than strength or size, which makes it genuinely effective and enjoyable for women, older adults, and people of all body types. Sendokai is a mixed, inclusive club where every student works within their own limits and progresses at their own pace.

What should I wear to my first class at Sendokai?

Wear clean, loose-fitting sports clothing — jogging bottoms and a t-shirt are ideal. Avoid jeans, zips, or jewellery. You train barefoot on the mat, so bring sandals or flip-flops to wear from the changing area to the mat edge. There is no need to buy a uniform (gi) before you start.

Do you offer children's Aikido classes at Sendokai, and how do you keep children safe?

Yes, Sendokai offers structured children’s Aikido sessions focused on posture, coordination, safe falling, and confidence-building in a fun, age-appropriate environment. All instructors working with children hold current DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checks. The club operates under a written safeguarding policy with a named welfare officer, clear procedures for raising concerns, and parental consent forms — in line with NSPCC Child Protection in Sport Unit standards.

What is Yoshinkan Aikido, and why does Sendokai train in this style?

Yoshinkan Aikido is a structured, fundamentals-first school of Aikido founded by Gozo Shioda, a direct student of Aikido’s originator. It uses a set of formal basic movements (kihon dosa) to build correct posture, stable balance, and unified movement from the very beginning — making it an excellent choice for complete beginners. Sendokai teaches this style because its clear, progressive method means you always understand why a technique works, not just what to copy.

How does grading work at Sendokai Aikido Yoshinkan UK?

Students progress through numbered kyu grades (beginner to intermediate) before working towards black belt (dan) ranks. Gradings are based on attendance, demonstrated technique, attitude, and instructor recommendation — not just time served. Your instructor will explain the full syllabus and grading schedule when you join. That said, gradings are milestones, not the main goal: regular, enjoyable practice always comes first.

How do I book a trial class at Sendokai Aikido Yoshinkan UK?

Simply get in touch via our Contact page to arrange your first visit. We recommend arriving 10–15 minutes early so your instructor can greet you, answer any questions, and make sure you have everything you need before stepping onto the mat. No long-term commitment is required to try a class.
